Wednesday 31st March 2010 saw a special event held in Alexander House, Nursing Home, Crossgates, when a large group of Brethren form Lodge St. John No. 540, accompanied by the Provincial Grand Master of Fife and Kinross, Brother Tom Bradley, assembled to present a Jubilee Certificate to Past Master, Brother Archie Connell, to commemorate fifty years of loyal service to Lodge St. John No. 540.

The Brethren were joined at the event by Brother Connell’s wife Nancy, and members of staff from Alexander House.

Brother Connell, then aged 26 years old, was Initiated into Lodge St. John No. 540 on 7th January 1959. In time, he progressed through the various Offices within the Lodge, and was Right Worshipful Master in 1967 and 1968.

Brother Connell also ran the Lodge’s Class of Instruction for many years, and took a great deal of pride in assisting young Freemasons to advance in the Lodge. He was a hard working and well respected member of the Lodge, but unfortunately due to health problems in recent years, he has not been able to attend Lodge meetings.

The presentation of the Certificate was made by the Right Worshipful Master of Lodge St. John No. 540, Brother Rankin Clarkson. Brother Clarkson also presented Alexander House with a suitable financial donation from the Lodge members in appreciation of the care received by Brother Connell.

The Brethren of Lodge St. John No. 540 are more than happy to be involved in any suitable local activity within the Village, and have recently made available their land adjacent to the Masonic Hall, to be converted into a Community Garden. It is hoped that this facility, which is due to be completed in the near future, will be enjoyed by all members of the local community.
